When I was 14, my only dream was to become the star in our football team. That meant beating out Tom, who was the best16at our school.
Football season started in September and I worked out all the summer. I carried my football everywhere for 17. Just before September, Tom was hit by a car and lost his right arm. I went to see him after he came back from 18. He looked very pale, but he didn't 19.
That season, I broke all of Tom's records while he 20 games on TV at home. We went 10-1 and I was named the best player, but I often had bad dreams that I was to blame for Tom's21.
One afternoon, I was crossing the field to go home and saw Tom stuck going over a fence(栅栏) — which wasn't 22 to climb if you had both arms. I'm sure I was the last person who he wanted to accept 23 from. But even that challenge he accepted. I helped him move slowly over the fence.
When we were finally 24 on the other side, he said to me, "You know, I didn't tell you this during the season, but you did 25. Thank you for filling in for 26."
His words freed me from my bad 27. I thought to myself, even without an arm he was more of a leader. Damaged but not defeated, he was 28 ahead of me. I was right to have29 him. From that day on, I grew 30 and a little more real.
This is a light-hearted book filled with colorful pictures. The book mainly tells that all feelings are OK, which is important for children to understand. This is a great introduction to talking about feelings. The funny pictures and simple words are perfect for young children. |
|
This book is more likely to catch boys' attention, although girls may enjoy it too. The basic message is that everyone has feelings. The pictures in this book are of superheroes that look disappointed, sad, embarrassed and so on. The final page is beautiful: a dad and his little son are reading together. They're tough guys "who love each other very much". |
|
This book invites children to imagine that everyone carries a bucket(桶) filled with good feelings. We can help fill people's buckets by doing kind things. One of the many good things about the book is that it talks about the fact that we should fill our own buckets by taking care of ourselves. It also talks about the fact that doing nice things for people makes us feel good. |
The three books can help you teach your children about their feelings and how to manage them. As a primary school teacher, I've used them to teach my students about different feelings. Helping children learn to express and manage their feelings can lead to an increase in confidence(自信心).
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Guinness has seen many new records. Actually, the idea of collecting interesting records came to Sir Hugh Beaver in the 1950s when he was the managing director of Guinness Brewery. This year, lots of sportsmen tried to set records though most sports were cancelled.
Jed Hockin, who is from Australia, is a famous young soccer star. Jed has got his fourth Guinness World Record. He now holds an official record for juggling(抛接) toilet paper with his foot 84 times in 30 seconds. Next, Jed plans to beat the record of 11,901 soccer touches in an hour. "I am looking forward to breaking more Guinness World Records," Jed wrote in an email.
The skilled Australian isn't the only sportsman setting records while unable to play regular sports. David Rush, from the US, became the fastest one to put on 10 T-shirts, taking only 15.61 seconds. David has already held many records. For example, he broke the record of the most juggling catches on a unicycle(独轮车) while his eyes were covered. "I loved watching the Guinness World Record specials on TV," said David. "I was fascinated and wanted to have a try myself."
Then there is Dr. Vikas Saini, another sportsman, who could put on 10 different socks very quickly (9.23 seconds) when he sat on the floor in his home in India. Guinness officials have noticed more record tries from homes and gardens. They've received applications(申请书) for different kinds of records. "We are inside, but we still want to encourage people to be creative and lift people's spirits. So we continue to provide people with a chance so that they can learn about and try to set world records," records manager Chrissy Fernandez said. "Guinness would like to keep people joining us and having fun because being inside can be a little boring."
Dear Daughter,
Congratulations! As we left Columbia University, I wanted to email a letter to tell you all that is on my mind.
First, you can't imagine how proud we are. You are going to get into Columbia University, which shows what an excellent student you are. Whether it is getting the highest grade in math, successfully selling your painted running shoes, or becoming one of the top speakers in Model UN, you have become a talented young woman. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.
I will not forget the first moment I held you in my arms. The exciting feeling touched my heart directly. It must be that "father-daughter connection" which will connect us for life. When I put you down, it was always with both relief (she finally fell asleep!) and regret (wishing I could hold you longer). And I will always remember taking you to the playground, and watching you having so much fun.
College will be the most important four years in your life. It is in college that you will truly discover what learning is about. You must become an independent learner and gain the ability to learn a new subject. So do take each subject seriously. The learning skills will be something you value forever.
Besides, College friends are often the best in life, because during college you are close to them physically than to your family.
I told your mom about this email, and asked what she wanted me to say. She thought and said, "Just ask her to take care of herself." Simple but deep caring — that is how your mother is, and that is why you love her so much. Hope Columbia will become the happiest four years in your life, and we'll always be by your side as long as you need us.
Love,
Dad & Mom
Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk has become a problem in outer space too. According to BBC News, there are more than 22,000 pieces of space junk floating(漂浮) around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes. There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.
Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed(碰撞) into a spaceship, it could damage the vehicle.
To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U.S. satellite hit an old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2,000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.
To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere(大气层) after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.
Many scientists are also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed.
"The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers," says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space researcher. "The time to act is now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become," he says.

Living and dealing with kids can be a hard job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even harder. Since I was a 47 (十几岁的;青少年的) boy, I have learned that communication is very important, 48 (两个都) when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other people know your feelings. If you are not 49 (能够) to communicate, things will become bad. When you are mad at your parents, not talking to them doesn't make any sense. If you look up the word "communication" in a dictionary, it will say "the exchange of ideas and 50 (信息)." To keep a good relationship, you must keep the communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it's just by writing a 51 (笔记). You have to make your parents feel good about how they are doing as parents. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you'll listen to what they say, but ask them 52 (礼貌地) to listen to you. Walking away only makes the situation 53 (更糟的).
This is an example. One night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she felt it would be rude of her to ask to go home first. As a 54 (结果), she was late getting home. Her parents were angry at first, but when Sophie 55 (解释) why she was late, they weren't so mad. Communication is the key factor here.
Problems can only be 56 (解决) with communication. Just remember, if you get into a situation like Sophie's, tell your parents how you feel.
Bhola is the only child of his family. He 57 (behave) badly and always asks his parents for money. Ramlal is worried about him all the time.
One day, he said to Bhola, "You'll have 58 to eat today unless you make fifty rupees(卢比)." Bhola's mother took pity on him and gave him fifty rupees. Bhola ran to give the money to his father. Ramlal said 59 (angry), "Don't try to cheat me. You're expected to make money on your own."
Still, Bhola didn't take his father's words seriously. He went to his mother 60 and asked for money, but this time he 61 (refuse). Feeling upset, Bhola started crying. A man passed by and asked him 62 he was crying. Bhola became even 63 (bad), "My father said if I couldn't make fifty rupees today, he wouldn't allow me 64 (eat) anything."
The man said, "Well, if you carry my bag to the train station, I will pay you ten rupees." Encouraged by the job, Bhola also helped other 65 (passenger) carry bags.
Finally, Bhola made fifty rupees. He gave the money to his father and said, "Dad, from now 66, I'll study hard and never waste money." Ramlal was glad that his son had finally learned the value of hard work and money.
The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.
◆Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says "Hi! I'm Carlos," don't just say "Hello." Repeat the person's name. Say "Hello, Carlos."
◆Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it's hard to memorize 109244153. But if you break it into three parts — 109/244/153 — it becomes easier.
◆Write out what you need to remember often. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing facts.
◆Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it's a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
◆Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can talk about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
◆Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.
All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
