Monty Roberts was the son of a horse trainer who would go from farm to farm training horses. Once when he was a senior school student, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

That night he wrote a seven-page paper talking about his goal of someday owning a horse ranch(养马场). He wrote about his dream and he even drew a plan for a large ranch.

The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, "See me after class."

The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, "Why did I receive an F?" The teacher said, "I can't give you a good grade. There's no way you could ever realize your dream! You have no money! You come from a poor family! Owning a horse ranch needs a lot of money!"

The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, "Now, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you."

Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. Hestated, "You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream."

Twenty years later, that same school teacher brought 30 kids to camp out on Monty's ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, "Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. Some of Paul's schoolmates learn two languages—English and French. So does Paul. As an Englishman, Paul can also speak German and Spanish. So, do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren't.

The survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.

And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That's why British people don't think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.

In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means at school learning a foreign language is only anoption. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don't students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good results in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.

To solve this problem, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.

Changing the British attitude(态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to have a try!

    1. 41. Which country is Paul from?
      A . France. B . Germany. C . Spain. D . The United Kingdom.
    2. 42. According to the passage, students in Britain prefer to learn         .
A . science or German B . history or science C . French or history D . German or French
    3. 43. What does the underlined word "option" mean in Chinese in paragraph 4?
      A . 选修课 B . 必修课 C . 实验课 D . 艺术课
    4. 44. Which of the following about the British people is TRUE?
A . They are good language learners. B . They are famous for speaking foreign languages. C . More than half of them only speak English. D . 56% of them speak at least one foreign language.
    5. 45. What is the best title of the passage?
A . English Speaking B . Young English Learners C . Schools in England D . Language Learning in Britain

Success is very important. But it does not come to our doors so often, so easily. It takes time! It takes efforts! Are you thirsty for success?46

First: start young! That's what pop star Shakira did. She first performed in public aged four and for nine years, she wrote songs and sang for her friends. For the last 15 years, she has been one of the most successful pop singers in the world.

47You can try to be confident(自信的).When Steven Spielberg didn't get into film school, he pretended(假装) that he had a job at Universal Studios.48 And he worked there for three months. For nearly 40 years, Spielberg has directed many famous Hollywood films.

It isn't just confidence. Our third tip is: work very hard. The "10, 000-hour rule of success" says you need to practice for 10,000 hours. 49Microsoft founder Bill Gates is a good example; for about five years, when he was a teenager, he spent 10,000 hours working on a computer. His hard work gave him a big advantage over other people.

50 At the age of five, Novak Djokovic decided he wanted to be the best tennis player in the world. Djokovic modeled himself on his hero, champion(冠军) Pete Sampras—he tried to be better than Sampras and everyone else. In 2011, Djokovic, aged 24, won three major world championships and became the World Number One.

A.That's about six hours a day for five years.

B.Still he walked confidently past the guards.

C.If you can't start young, it doesn't matter too much.

D.Follow our four secrets of success and you can succeed.

    E. Others can also encourage you, so the next tip is: set your goals high
