A black cat crosses your path? That's bad luck. Walk under a ladder (梯子)? That's bad luck, too. Break a mirror-seven years of bad luck! Kill a bee? You got it…bad luck!
But not everything brings bad luck. Some things bring good luck, too. For example, if you carry a rabbit's foot with you at all times that will bring you good luck. Of course, nowadays, lucky rabbit's feet aren't made of real rabbit's feet. An acorn (橡子) in your pocket is good luck, too. If you make a wish when you see a shooting star cross the sky, the wish will come true.
If you throw rice on a just-married couple, they will have many children. If you catch a falling leaf on the first day of autumn, you will have good luck all year. If you blow out all the candles on your birthday cake in one blow, you will get whatever you want.
Are any of these things true? You may have blown out all the candles on your birthday cake in one blow last year, but did you get everything you wanted? Probably not. If you walk under a ladder and a bucket of paint falls on your head-that's pretty bad luck. But if some candy or fruit falls, that's good luck.
In fact, good luck and bad luck are only "superstitions (迷信). Millions of people all over the world believe in superstitions, especially good luck ones. But remember, no amount of acorns is going to save you if you make your decisions because of silly superstitions.
You use it every day, and there's one in nearly every home and on every street comer-it's the toilet. Did you know the average person spends three whole years of his or her life on the toilets? For something so important, we give it very little thought. Well, November 19 is World Toilet Day-a day to bring attention to the toilet.
World Toilet Day reminds us of how lucky we are to have toilets. Many people still don't have clean toilets, and this causes a number of health problems.
Toilets take many different forms around the world. In the US, you won't see any squatting (蹲式的) toilets. Most people in the Western world have toilets and running water in their homes.
But, in some places, toilets are outdoors in "outhouses". Everyone in the neighborhood shares the same outhouse, and going to the toilet becomes a social event. Depending on where you are, public toilets can be very private, with machines playing the sound of running water to mask your noises. Or, public toilets can have no privacy at all-just one big room. Now some modem toilets have electronic keypads, heaters and even play music!
When you use the toilet, you should keep some manners in mind: Flush (冲) the toilet after you have finished. Wash your hands before you leave the restroom. Don't stand on the toilet when you are using it. If you use public toilets, there may be a line. Don't cut in line-this is very rude.
The webs that spiders build to catch insects seem weak. However, the strength of spider thread is greater than steel (钢铁). Webs can even stand up to very strong storms.
In each spider web, some threads are sticky, but some are not. When a spider is moving on the web, it will not step on the sticky threads. After a time the silk will lose its stickiness and become unable to catch insects. Then, spiders usually eat their own web.
Now a team of scientists has worked out why the spider web is so strong. It is not just the strength of the thread, but the clever design of the web. "The key to a web's success is its ability to keep its shape and strength even after some of the threads break," said scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院). The scientists found the thread itself has the ability to become softer or harder. So it can hold different types of heavy things.
In tests, scientists used three other strong materials made into the same webs. The spider thread was six times stronger than any other material. More surprisingly, when the scientists took away up to 10 percent of the threads from different places, the web didn't become any weaker. Actually, it became up to 10 percent stronger.
The spider web's clever design gives scientists many new ideas. The findings could help design safer buildings and even a new type of strong material. "It's a really good chance," said Markus Buehler, a professor at MIT. " It may give us some new ideas for engineering. "
a. the spider's thread is sticky
b. the thread has a lot of strength
c. the web has a clever design
d. the web can keep the strength forever

Sophia was outspoken, fashionable, and the "Queen Bee" in my school.
I looked up to her and idolized (崇拜) her. I listened to the music she listened to, wore the clothes she wore. I even took art class 32 I had really wanted to take theater. I finally fitted in her group.
One day, I skipped out of my last class a few minutes early to 33 seats for our group at the dining hall. Doing my homework, I didn't notice they had sat down behind me. Before I could say a word, I realized what they were 34.
I listened silently. "She's such a loser," one girl said.
Another girl added, "Sophia, she always 35 you, trying to copy you. "
"I wish she would leave us alone. We were in the same summer school and now she thinks we're best friends. The once familiar voice sounded so 36 and strange.
I was embarrassed. My hands were shaking. I couldn't help crying 37. I felt heart-broken for the very first time. How did this happen? I 38 we were friends.
I ran home. My mother just held me while I sobbed for hours. The 39 she gave was so simple, and I had heard it a million times. "Just be yourself and people will like you for 40 you are." This time it became so profound (深邃的). Then and there I 41 to find myself back. That was exactly what I did.
Over the next month, I went through a lot of 42. I bought new clothes that I wanted to wear. I no longer went to art class 43 them, and took theater. I began making new friends. I developed my own opinions and 44 again followed the crowd.
I had an amazing school year. 45 I look back, I think it was the year when I discovered the person I was going to be. Despite the pain I felt that day, it was a 46 they had given me.
Computers make people's lives really easy. People can use their computers for working, 47 (shop), or playing games. Laptop (笔记本) computers make people's lives even 48 (easy) as people can take laptops anywhere. They can work, shop, or play games any place 49 any time. 50 there is a problem with laptops. People can 51 (burn) by them!
People who sit with laptops on 52 (they) legs for hours and hours have noticed they get dark marks on their legs. The hot laptop is toasting the skin. 53 (doctor) have noticed more people show up with "toasted skin syndrome (综合症)". The marks are not 54 (danger), but they look strange because they are just in one spot on people's legs.
Companies that make computers tell people not 55 (let) warm computers touch bare skin for a long time. Wearing pants and putting a laptop's case under the laptop is 56 (usual) enough to protect one's skin from the computer's heat.
