OUR SCHOOL
We are students of No. 2 Middle School. In our school, there are many teachers and students. There are some rows of houses and there are trees and flowers, too.
We are in Class Four, Grade One. There are fifty students in our class, twenty-six girls and twenty-four boys. Our classroom is big. There are six windows and two doors. The walls are white. On the front(前面的) wall there is a blackboard. There are some pictures and two maps on the others. Our desks and chairs are new. Our classroom is very nice.
We study(学习) English, Chinese, math and other subjects(科目). Our teachers are good to us. We all like them.
School Rules
There are some school rules in Shuren Middle School. The students have different ideas about them. Let's have a look.
Jack: Some of them are too strict—Don't give a call between classes. Don't ride a bike at school.
Lucy: I don't think some of them are good—Don't be late. Don't eat food between classes. Girls can't wear miniskirts in summer.
Maria:Some of them are good for our study and life—Keep the classroom clean every day. Boys'hair must be short. Girls'long hair must be tied up (扎起来). Wear school uniforms on school days.
Today is the twins'birthday(生日). They are twelve. Jim, Mike, Kate and Bill are the twins'friends. They want to buy some presents(礼物) for them. There is a big shop near their school. It sells a lot of things. In the shop, people can buy foods, drinks and school things. The shop closes very late. So they can buy things on their way home. They buy a big cake, two boxes of color pencils, an orange yo-yo and some nice exercise books. They want to buy two dolls and two toy trains for the twins. But all the dolls and toys are too expensive.

At midnight on New Year's Eve, people in Rome, Italy, throw out all the things they no longer want. The streets are filled with old chairs, beds, clothes and dishes. In Madrid, Spain, the new year comes in more quietly. People come to the main square. Each holds a bag of grapes. As the clock strikes twelve, the people eat the grapes—one for each stroke.
In Tokyo, capital of Japan, people eat noodles on New Year's Eve. This food is said to bring long life. Early the next morning, some Japanese families climb Mount Fuji. There they watch the first sunrise of the new year.
What's Cool?
—By Maria Lee
This week, I asked students about fashion(时尚). I showed each student six things and asked them about each one. Some of their answers were interesting. Here are their likes and dislikes.
Judy Smith likes the key ring (钥匙环). Her friend Jeff says he can't stand the scarf(围巾). "It's for moms!" he said. William Jones loves the wallet, and his classmate Gina Taylor loves the watch. (Her best friend Ann Rice doesn't mind the watch, but she really likes the sunglasses!) Jerry Green also likes the sunglasses(太阳镜).
And the coolest(最酷的) thing was the belt. Everyone loved it!
