Everyone is good at something, for example, singing, dancing or playing instruments (乐器). Amy and Danny are my good friends. Amy sings the best 1 us. She joined lots of singing competitions and won many2Danny has a talent for playing the piano. His mom3him a piano as a gift on his eighth birthday. Then he started to play it. What about me? I'm good at4There is a talent show in our school every year. It is a5event (事件), and most students take part in (参与) it. It's up to the teachers and students to 6who sings the best or plays the piano the most7
Last year, Amy and Danny8the show. But I didn't, because I thought no one would go to a talent show to watch a kid draw a picture.9 of them practiced hard before the show. Amy won the second prize. Danny didn't win a prize, but he was10very happy. "The most important thing is that I tried my best to do it," he said.
Tom was three years old. He liked to watch TV with his parents after supper, but his parents never let him stay long. Mother would say, "It's eight o'clock now. It's time for you to go to bed, Tom."
"But why don't you go to bed, too?" Tom always asked.
"We are adults (大人)," mother would say, "And adults go to bed late."
One evening Tom asked his mother for an apple.
"But it's too late," his mother didn't want to give him anything to eat at bedtime. "The apples are already asleep(入睡)."
"But not all of them, Mom." Tom said, "The baby apples are perhaps asleep, but their parents are surely awake(醒着)."
Last Sunday, we asked some young people what exercise they did, and here are their answers.
Jack: I'm afraid I am very lazy. The only sport I do is to play football once a month and do some swimming, but only in summer. Every day, I am busy in studying.
Ted: About once a week, I go running. I run about 5 kilometers. In winter, I go skiing(滑雪) when I have time. But every morning, I just do some easy exercise.
David: I often do some sports at school or outside school. My mum makes me go swimming because I am kind of unhealthy. I began to do gymnastics(体操) 6 years ago. Costing over 600 pounds a year is very expensive for me. And I began to swim 8 years ago. Now I want to stop them because I have much homework. But I am afraid that I will be fat if I stop all the sports.
I like to have friends who are like me. I'm quieter than most of the kids in my class, and my best friend Yuan Li is quiet, too. There are some differences, though. I'm smarter than Yuan LI. she is more athletic. James Green |
It's not necessary to be the same. I like to have friends who are different from me. My best friend Larry is taller and more outgoing than me. We both like sports, but Larry is more athletic than me. He always beats(赢) me in tennis. Also, I'm quieter than he is. Huang Lei |
I don't really care. My best friend is Carol. Carol is very funny, and more outgoing than I am. But we both like doing the same things. I don't think differences are important in a friendship(友谊). Mary Smith |

Lin Tao is a student at Yingshan Middle School. He works very hard at school. He is the student in his class. He has a very healthy lifestyle now. But a year ago he was not so . He often felt after a day's work. His parents wanted him to do sports every day. But he said that he didn't like sports. After dinner, his parents asked him to go for a walk with them, but he only liked at home and read books. On weekends he never went out to play with his friends. He spent his time watching TV or computer games. That was really bad for his health. His parents about him. One day his teacher talked to him about his health and him to change(改变) his lifestyle .
Now he walks to school every day and to do exercise every day.
On weekends he plays basketball with his friends. Doing exercise helps him study better. Now he knows that doing exercise is very important.
If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them.If you do get lost, this is what you should do.
Sit down and stay where you are. Don't try to find your friends. Let them find you. You can help them to find you by staying in one place.
Give them a signal(信号)outing or whistling (吹口哨) three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep on shouting or whistling, always three times together. When people hear you, they will give two shouts or two whistles.
If you don't think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a small room with branches(树枝).
? You would have to leave your little branch room to look for something to eat and drink. Don't just walk away. Pick up small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back.
That is all to say.
A. What should you do if you get hungry or need drinking water? B. If you don't, you may get lost. C. What are you going to do when you get lost? D. There is anther way to help your friends or other people to find you. E. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help. F. Street Markets Around the World
There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:
There are many "floating markets" in Asia; perhaps the most unusual(非同寻常) is in Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damned Saduak. It's open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats.
Many Belgians(比利时人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It's the home of a colorful flower market. It's open every day except(除了) Monday. On Monday, instead of(替代) flowers, there's a wonderful bird market.
One of the world's famous markets is in Mexico City(墨西哥城)—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds, herbs(草本) and medicine. There're all kinds of things. It's open every day from early in the morning till late at night.
In England, on Saturday and Sunday thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it's the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.
